This will be MAHS's annual field herping trip to a NEW set of areas in Illinois! Last year was a great success for finding a number of amazing animals not found anywhere else in Wisconsin, but now we are branching out even more with the hopes of finding some cool and rare species not found in Wisconsin! We may find a number of different species in the areas we plan on going to! Plan to meet at the Stoughton/Dutch Mill Park and Ride in Madison and be prepared to leave the Madison area and head out west at 8:00 sharp. This will be a hiking oriented trip consisting of multiple short hikes among different locations. Please be sure to bring sturdy and comfortable hiking footwear, water, and anything else you may need and be prepared for hiking up and around some moderate to steep and difficult terrain at some of our stops.
This year’s field outing will be a very special opportunity to go to certain areas where most people are not ordinarily allowed to go, and will contain many species of state of Illinois rare and protected species of plants and animals. Therefore, in order to help us maintain good relationships with those above us with the state of Illinois who helped make this opportunity possible, it will be critical to follow all posted and verbal instructions and directions when we are at these sites. Protected species of animals at these locations are subject to additional state nature preserve protections, and in most, if not all cases, may not be collected, handled, touched, or disturbed in any other significant way. Additionally, there may be cases where even ground cover and debris may not be moved or disturbed. Please be respectful of these rules and restrictions set in place for us, and anyone who does not follow these guidelines will be asked to leave the outing with no exceptions and will be subject to further disciplinary action!
*Venomous animals may be present at some locations, and we ask everyone to abide by the necessary safety protocols given when in these areas.* Lunch will also be provided! Below is a tentative itinerary including rough times spent at each location that are subject to change and a list of possible species we may see at each stop. We can't guarantee that we will see all of these however. We may go to additional areas nearby if time permits. Hope to see everyone bright and early!
