30th Annual Midwest Herpetological Symposium and SEWERFEST-Fall 2015
Dates: Friday, November 6th to Sunday, November 8th, 2015.
Locations: Monona Terrace, Madison WI and Fountain Banquet Hall, Sturtevant WI.
The Midwest Herpetological Symposium is an annual event hosted each year by a different herpetological society in each tern state. This year, it was the symposium’s turn to come to Wisconsin, and MAHS was scheduled to host this year’s 30th annual symposium! It was an amazing three day weekend full of unique and interesting learning opportunities, chances to meet and connect with new faces, and much more! Friday began with event sign ins and registration, meet and greets, followed by introductory remarks and presentations by Ryan McVeigh, president and founder of MAHS, Phil Goss of USARK (the United States Association of Reptile Keepers), and David Barker, world renowned python specialist of VPI!
Saturday kicked off with continued registration and sign in, as well as the majority of speakers and auctions. Special thanks goes out to Dan Krull, Phil Goss, Rob Carmichael, Logan Huse, Jefferey M. Lorch, Brandon Fowler, Erica Mede, Sam Fellows, David Barker, and Dr. Mike Wenninger for presenting upon a variety of topics and issues affecting both wild and captive herps alike.  Saturday night was followed up with by a keynote presentation by David Barker on “the Invisible Ark-In Defense of Captivity” , then followed by live and silent auctions, including donations made by Zilla products, the Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest IL, Hoosier Herp Society, native species prints by Mike Day photography, Richie Braatz of Baraboo Electric Art, and many others!
On Sunday, MAHS and USARK were back at SEWERFEST’s 2015 fall show in full force as part of the third day of the Symposium! This followed the initial future Symposium host’s meeting in Madison. Opportunities for all Symposium goers to carpool from Madison to SEWERFEST were also provided. In addition to continuing to share our knowledge and passion with show goers, we spread the word about current legislation in the state of Wisconsin and how everyone can take action. We always look forward to doing more SEWERFEST shows in the future.
MAHS would like to thank all participating speakers, members, organizations, volunteers, and organizers of the 30th Midwest Herpetological Symposium for assisting with our organization’s hosting and organization of this event to make it possible, as well as the huge success that it was.  Thanks also goes out to each sponsor for helping fund this event, including: USARK and Goss Reptiles, Zilla Products, Spartan Animal Hospital, Mike Day Photography, Baraboo Electric Art, RAW Reptiles, Josh’s Frogs, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, Mazuri, Supreme Gecko, Reptile Emporium and Acrylic Displays, the Hockanum Desert Museum, and of course, MAHS (the Madison Area Herpetological Society).
