MAHS Events-2013

With our goal of reaching out to the public to educate people about reptiles, we often are part of local events.  This is a place to see what we are doing and see pictures of our members getting out and educating people.  We also do MAHS sponsored outings for members, which can be anything from a tour of a breeder’s facility to hiking in the area to find local native reptile species.  Check out the stories below from 2013 to see what we did, and what members had to say, along with pictures of our adventures.  These aren’t even all of the events and outreach opportunities we did in 2013! Saturday Science at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery
Location: Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, UW Madison, Madison WI

On Saturday January 5th, MAHS attended a Saturday Science event on Dinosaurs, reptiles, and the Mesozoic era at the WI Institute for Discovery. Our purpose was to educate and raise awareness of misunderstood reptiles and to promote their proper care and education.

MAHS Kalahari Resort Trip
Location: Kalahari Resort, Lake Delton WI

On Saturday January 19th, MAHS members and board members convened at the Stoughton Park and Ride for a fun filled day at Kalahari Resort. We utilized a group discount of 10 or more fot combination passes for the Resort’s Waterpark and Indoor Theme Park. Numerous activities and attractions were enjoyed by everyone including waterslides, wave pools, go carts, ropes course, bowling, miniature golf, laser tag, and more!

MAHS at Chicagoland ReptiCon
Location: Kane County Fairgrounds, Chicago, IL

January 26th and 27th, and June 29th and 30th, 2013
On Saturday January 26th and Sunday January 27th, as well as June 29th and 30th MAHS attended the 2013 Chicagoland ReptiCon. Founded in 2003, Repticon is the national industry leader in reptile and exotic animal expos with shows in 18 states and 35 cities year-round. MAHS raised knowledge and awareness of a variety of reptile related topics from native species to captive care, and presented a series of talks on the top 10 beginner reptiles and Leapin’ Lizards, highlighting the diversity of lizard species from around the world.

MAHS at the Great Lakes Pet Expo
Location: Wisconsin Expo Center, WI State Fair Park, West Allis WI

On Saturday, February 2nd, MAHS attended the Great Lakes Pet Expo to spread education on all aspects of reptiles and amphibians. The Great Lakes Pet Expo is the premier pet lovers event in SE Wisconsin. Held annually on Superbowl Saturday, this event offers education, activities, vendors, entertainment and more. Shelters and Rescues will be on hand with their adoptable animals! Vendors showcasing the latest pet products are also on hand. All proceeds from this non-profit show benefit companion animals and their families around the state of Wisconsin!!

MAHS at AniMart’s TropicalFest
Location: AniMart, Madison WI

On February 23rd, MAHS participated in Animart’s tropical fest. This fun event consisted of frog races, refreshments, guided tours and more. MAHS participated with a table at this event, with its main purpose educating the public on all aspects of reptiles and amphibians.

MAHS Saturday Science Event
Location: Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, UW Madison, Madison WI

On March 2nd, 2013, MAHS attended and participated in a Saturday Science education and outreach event at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery at UW Madison. Featuring an appreciation for Aldo Leopold, MAHS emphasized native species and the importance of appreciating and respecting all snakes and other reptiles and amphibians.

MAHS at the Super Science Saturday Event

On March 9th, 2013, MAHS was invited to participate in Randall Elementary Super Science Saturday event. Attracting hundreds of students, parents, and teachers, the primary purpose of the event was to educate the public on all aspects of reptiles and amphibians as well as present a rotating 3 session presentation on the top 10 reptiles for beginners.

Reptile Rampage!
Location: Wildlife Discovery Center, Lake Forest, IL
Date: March 10th, 2013
On Sunday March 10, 2013, MAHS participated spreading education and outreach in Reptile Rampage, organized and hosted by Rob Carmichael, Curator of the Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest Illinois. In addition to the many reptiles on display, there will be children’s arts-and-crafts activities, face painting for the kids, a Patch challenge ($5 extra for the patch), a fabulous silent auction, and much more. All proceeds from Reptile Rampage will benefit the Wildlife Discovery Center.

Wingra School Science Night
Location: Wingra School, Madison WI

On Wednesday March 13th 2013, MAHS was invited to participate in Wingra school’s science night with an informative, exciting, and interactive table and live animals for over 30 students. UW Chemistry Professor, Marty Zanni also presented a Shakhashiri style Chemistry demonstration as well.

Explore Science Night-Crestwood Elementary

On Tuesday March 19th 2013, MAHS was invited to participate in Crestwood Elementary’s “Explore Science Night”. Crestwood students had the opportunity to create and share their own science projects while learning about MAHS’ involvement in the community.  There were many hands-on activities from local science experts including MAHS for students and their families to explore.

MAHS at the UW Whitewater Early Childhood Conference
Location: UW Whitewater Campus, Whitewater, WI

On Friday, April 5th 2013, MAHS was invited to participate in UW Whitewater’s early childhood conference. Hosted by the Wisconsin Nature Action Collaborative for Children as part of the UW-Whitewater Early Childhood Conference, this conference aims to connect adults (teachers) to nature, so they might do so for the children they work with. The event firmly believes young children need many opportunities to explore and fall in love with the natural world, so they develop a sense of protectiveness and stewardship for it as adults.

MAHS at UW Science Expeditions
Location: Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, UW Madison, Madison WI

MAHS returned in full force for its second UW Expeditions 2013, a public celebration that offer a wide range of science, technology, engineering and math-related activities creative exhibitions, demonstrations, performances, tours, debates, workshops, concerts over a period of several days, in a variety of locations throughout the UW Madison campus.

Van Hise Elementary Science Show

On Tuesday, April 9th, 2013, MAHS participated in Van Hise’s Science Show, a night filled with unique and exciting science demonstrations and experiments for the entire family, including MAHS’s own informative table and animals designed to educate the public about misunderstood reptiles and amphibians, as well as MAHS’ important work in the community.

MAHS at Chicago ReptileFest
Location: Physical Education Complex, Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago IL

On Saturday April 13th and Sunday, April 14th 2013, MAHS was invited to participate in Chicagoland’s ReptileFest hosted by the Chicago Herpetological Society. Hundreds of reptile, amphibian, and invertebrate species found worldwide were available to see, touch, and learn about at this weekend long education only event. Photo opportunities, games, prizes, herp health discussion with veterinarians, discussions with Mr. Phil Goss of USARK, and more were also highlights of the event. MAHS managed to raise at least $1,012 in funds, making ReptileFest 2013 an unprecedented success for our organization!

Madison College Spring Spectacular

On 04/20/13, MAHS attended Madison’s Truax College’s Spring Spectacular 2013! MAHS presented and taught about many frequently misunderstood reptiles and amphibians, animal adoptions, as well as ways to become involved with a great local cause! This event also had music, break dancing, artists, and more!

MAHS Education Show at Country View Elementary School
Location: Countryview Elementary, Verona WI

On 04/22/13, MAHS was invited to Country View Elementary to present on native species and the diversity of snakes and other herps at Country View Elementary for K-2nd graders. We answered questions, and presented several unique native and non native animals for kids of Country View Elementary to see and learn about.

MAHS at Week of the Young Child Family Celebration Night

MAHS was invited to help in celebrating Week of the Young Child and Family on April 26th! A Community-coordinated free family night event in April, this event enabled MAHS to promote our mission to educate enthusiasts and the general public all about misunderstood reptiles and amphibians, and to expand our presence in the Janesville, Evansville, and surrounding communities!

MAHS at McCarthy Park-Youth Services Day
Location: McCarthy Park, Madison/Sun Prairie WI

Organized by the Dane County Parks Volunteer Program, Friends of McCarthy Youth Conservation Park, and Madison East Kiwanis Club, Youth Services day is a national volunteer day where students, service groups, community organizations, and families volunteer to participate in community service and outreach projects to help make a difference! MAHS attended to promote our mission in educating the public about our presence and misunderstood animals, but was unable to bring live animals due to the cold weather.

Spring Wisconsin Reptile Expo
Location: VFW Post 7591, Madison WI

WIRE is an interactive gathering of professional herpetoculturists, representatives from various herpetological organizations from Wisconsin and surrounding states, and many reptile hobbyists at all levels of interest and expertise. This was a great place for MAHS to raise awareness and dissipate fears of reptiles, promote adoptable animals, hold a silent auction on donated goods, and sharing knowledge and information with people on all aspects of herpetology and herpetoculture.

WID Saturday Science Event-Break Dancing
Location: Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, UW Madison, Madison WI

On Saturday, May 4th, MAHS attended and presented an interesting and informative table at the WI Institute for Discovery’s Saturday Science Event with live snakes to educate enthusiasts and the general public about misunderstood herps. This monthly series consists of free science exploration and education programs aimed at families and learners of all ages.

MAHS at Howl and Meow
Location: Richland Center Community Center, Richland Center WI

On Sunday May 5th, Madison Area Herpetological Society held an educational presentation and display educating members of the Richland Center community about commonly misunderstood reptiles and proper reptile care and husbandry. The first Sunday in May is the traditional day for the Ocooch Mountain Humane Society to celebrate pets and the joy they bring to our lives with a grand event called “Howl and Meow.” 2013 marks the 11th annual Howl and Meow event that includes fine entertaining features. MAHS will, in addition, assist in the creation and influence of an ordinance for the Richland Center community.

MAHS at Family Science Night at Hawthorne School

On Tuesday May 14th, MAHS helped wrap us the semester’s Family Science Nights with a bang by attending Hawthorne School’s family science night. We presented live animals, as well as educate and raise knowledge and awareness of everything reptile related.

Snake Awareness Day

Snake Awareness Day is occurring nationwide, and this was MAHS’ opportunity to do their part. We set up table at Animart on Madison’s east side for our second annual snake awareness day in order to raise understanding and awareness about these amazing creatures and to educate as many people as we can!

MAHS Spring Field Outing-Southwest WI

MAHS would like to thank everyone who attended our 2013 MAHS Field Outing, which was TONS of fun! The tally was 5 common garters, several northern leopard and pickerel frogs, 1 Eastern Milk with pretty red blotches, Prairie ringneck snake, desiccated painted and Blanding’s turtle shells, and 7 Timbers including a yearling. In addition, we had along Dominique Keller, DVM, PhD and Jeff Lorch, Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology University of Wisconsin-Madison to lend expertise on identifying and taking any samples of Snake Fungal Disease (SFD), where unfortunately we believe to have found it. The trip was a success, and we hope to do it again next year with some new areas.

MAHS at Dane County Parks BikeDane
Location: Lake Farm County Park, Madison WI

Situated along the capitol city bike trail that runs through Madison and Fitchburg, BikeDane 2013 was hosted by Dane County Parks and Recreation, and was an annual Bikeathon consisting of many various stops or detours along the way for bikers and any other trail users to stop at to meet and talk with area nonprofits as well as view and learn more about the 9 Springs E-Way. MAHS presented yet another of its unique and informative displays near Lake Farm Park with emphasis on native reptiles and amphibians. The event was a success, with roughly 35 passerbys expressing interest or wanting to learn more about the work of MAHS!

MAHS at Petco of Delafield Reptile Rally

On Saturday June 15th, MAHS was invited to participate in raising knowledge and awareness of misunderstood reptiles and amphibians, promoting proper care and husbandry, and showcasing adoptable animals through PetCo’s annual Reptile Rally. Reptile Rally was a nationwide celebratory event held at and hosted by PetCo locations nationwide to highlight the importance of education and adoption.

Madison Children’s Museum Rooftop Ramble June, July, and August
Location: Madison Children’s Museum, Madison WI

June 22nd, July 27th, and August 30th, 2013
On Saturday June 22nd, July 27th, and August 30th, MAHS presented at the Madison Children’s Museum on native species of Wisconsin as well as the top 10 beginner reptiles, and the general differences between reptiles and amphibians. Visitors found out which species can be found right here in Wisconsin, and their own backyards and learned all about their habitats, what they eat, and more! In July, MAHS held an encore presentation featuring several of the top 10 reptiles for beginners. Visitors had the chance to see and learn about what it takes to care for a reptile, and which species make the most suitable choices for the beginner. Finally, MAHS presented a summer finale where we educated visitors on the general differences between reptiles and amphibians, and took a more active role in spreading the word about our station to patrons throughout the museum. MAHS looks forward to continue working with Madison Children’s Museum in doing rooftop ramble events as well as additional, more individualized workshops and sessions in the future.

Leopold Elementary Wild About Animals Summer Show

On 06/28/13 and 07/19/13, MAHS presented an educational and informative presentation on Wisconsin’s native reptiles and amphibians for Madison’s Summer Schools at Leopold Elementary. The children were extremely excited for the event, and even teachers learned a few new things.

MAHS Presentation at Pike Lake
Location: Kettle Moraine State Forest Pike Lake Unit, Hartford WI

MAHS educated and provided an informative show and display with emphasis on native species. Hosted by the Friends of Kettle Moraine-Pike Lake Unit and the Wisconsin DNR, this event had a very strong turnout, with visitors and guests filling the park shelter.

MAHS Behind the Scenes and Self Guided Tours of the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium

On Saturday, July 20th, MAHS went on a behind the scenes and self guided tour of the living animals collection of the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque IA. We sae many amazing freshwater and marine exhibits, 3d/4D theatre, and of course many unique reptile and amphibian exhibits including the museum’s new exhibit Turtles: Secrets of the Shell. With more than 200 turtles in the exhibit, representing more than 100 species from around the world, museum executive director Jerry Enzler stated it is the largest and most diverse collection of turtles on public display anywhere in the world.

MAHS Reptile Husbandry and Education Presentation at the Sauk County Humane Society

On July 30th, MAHS presented at the Sauk County Humane Society’s Critter Camp 2013 in Baraboo WI. Critter Camp is an animal-themed summer day camp at the Sauk County Humane Society. Each week includes animal-related educational activities, animal interactions, visits from special guests, field trips, and more. Campers also complete service projects to benefit shelter animals. MAHS was involved with a presentation on the top 10 beginner reptiles as well as basic reptile care and education!

SEWERFEST Summer Show
Location: Fountain Banquet Hall, Sturtevant WI

SEWERFest began in 2001 as a small Midwestern Reptile show. Since then, the annual Sale and Fest has grown in popularity and remains a Summertime (and now Fall!) favorite: Includes a wide variety of diverse captive bred animals Features quality breeders across Wisconsin, the Midwest, and all over the United States MAHS attended to raise understanding and awareness of reptiles and amphibians, and to view animals rarely seen in zoos or museums. MAHS managed to adopt out all of our adoptable animals, successfully raffle off several good deals on contributions from sponsors, and gathered nearly 400 signed letters in opposition to the proposed “categorical exclusion” and listing of 5 additional constrictor species.

MAHS Devil’s Lake State Park Education Program

On Saturday August 10th, MAHS presented an interactive native species evening presentation at the outdoor ampitheatre located in Devil’s Lake State Park. Visitors and attendees had the opportunity to see and learn about herps native to the park, which are venomous and non venomous, and how MAHS plays an active role in the community in its mission to educate about herps.

MAHS “Radical Reptiles and Amazing Amphibians” at Urban Ecology Center
Location: Urban Ecology Center, Menomonee Valley Branch, Milwaukee WI

On Saturday August 17th, MAHS participated in and presented a herpetology program for the Urban Ecology Center-Menomonee Valley Branch in Milwaukee WI. We covered the extremely diverse groups of reptiles and amphibians including snakes, lizards, turtles/tortoises, salamanders, and frogs/toads and educated attendees about the many myths and misunderstandings about these amazing animals!

Hartland WI Fall Fest at St. Charles Parish

On Saturday, September 7th, MAHS educated Fall Fest goers about our beloved pets! Fall Fest is a carnival and event put on by St. Charles Parish in Hartland, WI. There was live music, a carnival, food, and much more! MAHS also presented an exciting Live Reptile Show on the main stage. For the rest of the day, we had tables and tent, where we allowed festival goers come see these amazing creatures up close and personal! It was a blast!

AniMart Petfest/Reptile Discovery Day

MAHS participated in its second Reptile Discovery Day at AniMart’s PetFest on September 14th. MAHS had a massive presence at Petfest, and had many live reptiles and amphibians, fun and educational games, trivia, prizes, raffles, and many more opportunities to educate the public and to promote the reptile hobby.

Exotic Pet Fair at Globe University-Madison East

On Wednesday September 18th, MAHS attended an open house at Globe University-Madison East. Globe University holds an open house each year and invites students, staff, and the public to enjoy free food, learn about the school. Also included was a dunk tank, kid’s carnival games, pony rides, petting zoo, and more! This year, the program focus was on the college’s veterinary tech program, where students and area nonprofits are invited to bring their animals in and educate guests and visitors on their animal(s). All were welcome to attend and participate!

Wisconsin Reptile Expo Fall Show

On September 22nd 2013, MAHS attended Madison’s only captive bred reptile show. This was a great opportunity to come see a wide variety of captive bred animals and be able to converse and educate the people that breed and care for those species and the general public. MAHS also raised awareness of proposed “categorical exclusion” proposed by USFWS, and raised the importance of education, proper care, membership and our kid’s herpetological society.

MAHS Fall Field Outing-Central WI

On Saturday, September 21st, the MAHS central Wisconsin field outing took place! Wow, what a great trip. We found redback salamanders, spotted salamanders, a blue spotted salamander, spring peepers, green frogs, 3 baby northern watersnakes, 3 juvenile fox snakes, a northern prairie skink, neonate and adult eastern garter snakes, and TWO SMOOTH GREEN SNAKES!!!! Thanks goes out to Ryan McVeigh, Eric Roscoe, Audra Hilse, and Austin Krueger for working together to successfully lead and coordinate the outing!

Wisconsin Science Festival

On Saturday, September 28th, MAHS once again attended the Wisconsin Science Festival 2013! WI Science Festivals are a public celebrations that offer a wide range of science, technology, engineering and math-related activities creative exhibitions, demonstrations, performances, tours, debates, workshops, concerts over a period of several days, in a variety of locations. MAHS educated Festival goers about unique and misunderstood reptiles and amphibians, and provided many very cool handouts and temporary tattoos. MAHS looks forward to next year’s Science Festival!

MAHS at the Winnebago Pet Expo!

On Saturday, October 5th, MAHS traveled up to Oshkosh WI for the first annual Winnebago Pet Expo! We did what we and that was showing and educating about reptiles and amphibians as well as dispelling the many myths and misperceptions about them! It was a blast, so don’t miss out! We also presented on the top 10 reptiles for beginners, and had the opportunity to see and listen to the famous Jim Nesci of Cold Blood Creatures and Bubba the American Alligator!

Friends of Capitol Springs Harvest Moon Festival

On 10/11/13, MAHS attended a fun and exciting educational event organized by the Friends of Lake Farm park. The event was a guided outdoor/indoor event with tours/hiking around Lake Farm Park. MAHS was  be situated inside as the first checkpoint along with several other kid’s events and we will have several unique and interesting animals for visitors to meet in person, including native and exotic species! We were among the most popular tables as visitors had the chance to see and learn about native species of reptiles and amphibians!

MAHS at NARBC Tinley Park

MAHS had many amazing deals and promotions at the NARBC: North American Reptile Breeders Conference in Tinley Park, IL from October 11-13! The Madison Area Herpetological Society had all of the newest gear available purchase along with having a FREE RAFFLE!!! That’s right, FREEEEE!!!! Everyone had the opportunity to win a NEW, CB-110 ARS Plastics Rack with Tubs and Heat included! For the ladies, Smart Betty Madison was with us and raffled off a brand new COACH PURSE!!!! Remember, every raffle entry we get helps us raise money to educate the public about these amazing animals we all love! We also had out new T-shirts, AWESOME Window Cling, and Enter our FREE RAFFLES!!!! It was a weekend not to be forgotten!

MAHS “Brown Bag” Seminar at Aldo Leopold Foundation

On Friday, October 25th, MAHS was invited in to raise awareness of Wisconsin’s native species to the Aldo Leopold Foundation near Baraboo and Portage WI! Staff members, interns, and members of the community learned about which species are native to Wisconsin, which are venomous, and what property and landowners can do to help protect and conserve these often misunderstood and underrepresented animals on their own properties.

Family Science Night at the UW Space Place

On Friday November 22nd, MAHS was invited to and participated in the Family Science Night held at the UW Space Place and hosted by the Institute for Biology Education, and other Madison area Community groups! This event was a huge success, with about 400-425 people with families even coming from outside the Madison area to attend. There were so many positive comments from parents and children, that this event will be held again next year!

Madison Children’s Museum Rooftop Ramble

On Saturday December 7th and 14th, MAHS presented at the Madison Children’s Museum with topic emphases on the beneficial impacts snakes and other reptiles have on society as well as the many unique passive and active ways reptiles and amphibians have of defending themselves! MAHS looks forward to continue working with Madison Children’s Museum in doing rooftop ramble events as well as additional, more individualized workshops and sessions in 2014.
