MAHS Events-2014

With our goal of reaching out to the public to educate people about reptiles, we often are part of local events.  This is a place to see what we are doing and see pictures of our members getting out and educating people.  We also do MAHS sponsored outings for members, which can be anything from a tour of a breeder’s facility to hiking in the area to find local native reptile species.  Check out the stories below from 2014 to see what we did, and what members had to say, along with pictures of our adventures.  These aren’t even all of the events and outreach opportunities we did in 2014! Did you know that every year, MAHS gets invited to do birthday parties? Yep, we can bring several of our awesome ambassador reptiles and ambassadors to one lucky kid’s birthday to do a show and tell presentation, or even more formal lecture presentation. The special birthday kid also has the option of getting their own shed snake skin or other token from us! No matter how old or young, we love to do birthday parties, and could come to your next one!

Yahara District Cub Scout Winterfest
Location: United Church of Christ (UCC), Windsor WI

On Sunday January 19th, MAHS presented an exciting and informative presentation on Wisconsin’s native species of reptiles and amphibians and reptiles and amphibians in general for Cub Scout Pack 155 of Windsor Wisconsin. Located at the United Church of Christ (UCC), many different species of reptiles and amphibians representative of the major taxa (boas and pythons, colubrids, turtles/tortoises, lizards/geckos, and amphibians) invaded the meeting as cub scouts and parents alike learned about the biology and history of many species while asking questions. It was a blast overall!

Annual PJ Party at the Madison Children’s Museum

On Friday, January 24th, MAHS was invited to attend and participate in the Madison Children’s Museum’s annual 2014 PJ Party. We were situated in the museum’s rooftop “clubhouse” and discovery center, where the theme of the night was “nocturnal animals”. We presented the many features and adaptions nocturnal reptiles and amphibians (as well as a few arachnids) have for life at night! We also educated interested participants on the many myths and misinformation about reptiles and amphibians. Overall, the event was a blast and a success!

Great Lakes Pet Expo

On Saturday, February 1st, MAHS attended the annual Great Lakes Pet Expo! The Great Lakes Pet Expo is a unique event that raises money for companion animals all over Wisconsin. MAHS had a significant presence dominating  the expo’s reptile designated area as we showed and educated upon dozens of reptile, amphibian, and invertebrates species! We also raffled off an amazing Zilla enclosure kit as well!

UW Oshkosh Biology and Microbiology Club Presentation

On Monday, February 10th, MAHS and the UW Oshkosh Zoological club presented all about native species of Wisconsin! We covered many species of reptiles and amphibians live in Wisconsin, and where and how to find them! We also highlighted  many engineering concepts inspired by reptiles and amphibians! How strong is a gecko’s toe pad? What can we learn from some frog’s ability to freeze solid in the winter? This was an amazing opportunity to expand our presence into Oshkosh and the Fox Valley region of Wisconsin!

AniMart Tropical Escape

MAHS once again attended AniMart’s annual Tropical Escape 2014 on Saturday February 22nd! We presented a variety of snakes and other reptiles to help dispel fears and misinformation, as well as promote proper and responsible care for your reptilian pets! This was a fun pet inspired event and way to show support for our sponsors!

Bowl Your Brains Out!

On Sunday, February 24th, MAHS held its first ever bowling social at Dream Lanes in Madison WI. There was lots of bowling, awesome raffle prizes, arcade games, food, and much more! This event was a blast! Stay tuned for more MAHS sponsored events similar to this in the future!

Wisconsin Salamander Roadway Rescue Kickoff Meeting
Location: Cottage Grove, WI
Date: Sunday, Mach 2nd 2014
March 2nd, 2014 was the Kickoff meeting for the tiger salamander rescue project occurring this spring west of Madison. Interested conservationists and volunteers (including MAHS) gathered to begin planning for efforts to rescue and relocate Eastern tiger salamanders from roads on the west side of Madison.

Wisconsin Exotic Animal Veterinary Conference
Location: UW Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, Madison WI
Dates: Saturday, March 1st and Sunday March 2nd 2014
On Sunday, March 2nd, MAHS provided animals for the annual Wisconsin Exotic Animal Veterinary Conference organized by UW Madison’s Wildlife, Exotic, and Zoo Animal Medicine club. This event will hosted a series of lectures, classes, and labs surrounding mammalian, avian, and reptile veterinary medicine! MAHS is pleased to announce that we had the opportunity to provide additional animals (especially lizards and chelonians) for Sunday’s reptile handling, restraint, and clinical techniques class and lab at the UW School of Veterinary Medicine!

Globe University Madison East Reptile Handling and Restraint Workshop
Location: Globe University East, Madison WI

On Wednesday, March 5th, MAHS presented on reptile handling and restraint for Globe University’s Veterinary Technician program! Vet Tech students learned the ways of how to safely and appropriately handle and/or restrain all of the major groups of reptiles and amphibians from salamanders to crocodilians.

On Saturday, March 8th, MAHS presented an educational outreach effort called Leaping Lizards, a presentation all about the unique features of lizards from iguanas to Gila monsters! We also bought and showed several unique lizards and other reptiles as well.

Reptile Rampage
Location: Wildlife Discovery Center, Lake Forest IL
Date: Sunday, March 9thth 2014
On Sunday March 9, 2014, MAHS participated spreading education and outreach in Reptile Rampage, organized and hosted by Rob Carmichael, Curator of the Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest Illinois. In addition to the many reptiles on display, there will be children’s arts-and-crafts activities, face painting for the kids, a Patch challenge ($5 extra for the patch), a fabulous silent auction, and much more. All proceeds from Reptile Rampage will benefit the Wildlife Discovery Center.

Cub Scout Presentation
Location: Royal Oaks Elementary School, Sun Prairie WI

On Thursday, March 13th, MAHS presented to the Sun Prairie area Cub Scout troop about the many unique and fascinating forms of reptile inspired engineering! Members learned all about the many ways reptiles and amphibians inspire engineering! All were welcome to attend and participate!

Madison Children’s Museum Workshops Spring
Location: Madison Children’s Museum, Madison WI
Dates:  Saturdays, March 22nd, April 19th, and May 10th 2014
On Saturdays March 22nd, April 19th, and May 10th, MAHS presented a three part workshop series to any and all interested participants at the Madison Children’s Museum. Designed to garner greater participation and interaction, these workshops included many interesting topics including native species, awesome amphibians, and tree dwelling animals!

Native Species with Devil’s Lake State Park!
Location: Nature center, Devil’s Lake State Park, Baraboo WI
Date: Saturday, March 29th 2014
On Saturday, March 29th beginning at 11 am, MAHS presented native species of reptiles and amphibians at Devil’s Lake State Park as well as throughout Wisconsin! These misunderstood and under represented animals can be found in Wisconsin’s forests, prairies, wetlands, and even your own backyard!  Turnout was far better than expected, with over 50 people in attendance! Although we did not find any herps before or after, this event was still am awesome success and opportunity to raise awareness and appreciation for herps both great and small!

Van Hise Elementary Science Night

On Tuesday, April 1st 2014, MAHS stoked kids and parents alike as we attended our second annual science night at Van Hise elementary! Visitors had the amazing opportunity to see and learn about reptiles and amphibians up close and personal, especially geckos and how different species have different traits and adaptations for specialized lifestyles. The event was a blast and a success, and we hope to return next year!

MAHS at UW Science Expeditions
Location: Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, Madison WI

MAHS returned in full force for its THIRD UW Expeditions 2014, a public celebration that offer a wide range of science, technology, engineering and math-related activities creative exhibitions, demonstrations, performances, tours, debates, workshops, concerts over a period of several days, in a variety of locations throughout the UW Madison campus. This event is always one of our favorites!

Globe University Adopt Around the Globe!
Location: Globe University East, Madison WI
Date: Wednesday April 9th 2014
MAHS was invited to Globe University’s Madison WI East community celebration festival featuring several animal related Madison area nonprofits and other organizations. While not a large event, we always enjoy working with Globe University in teaching and educating students in the veterinary technician program through hands on experience to better appreciate reptiles and in becoming more familiar with handling and working with animals that are becoming increasingly seen in the veterinary profession.

ReptileFest
Location: University of IL P.E. Building, Chicago IL
Dates: Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13th 2014
Hosted and sponsored by the renowned Chicago Herpetological Society (CHS), Reptile Fest2014 is the nation’s largest education only event to educate the public about what reptiles and amphibians into what these animals are really like, in an exciting, accurate and responsible manner. MAHS was also there with a large section of floor space among the more than 40,000 square feet showing off and educating all about many of our favorite reptiles and amphibians. It was truly an awesome and amazing event!

UW Veterinary School Reptile Teaching Labs
Location: UW Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, Madison WI
Dates: Wednesday, April 16th and April 23rd 2014
On Wednesday, April 16th (and again on April 23), MAHS came in to provide animals as well as show basic handling techniques such as sexing, restraint, and general overviews and identification of common species for rotating groups of UW vet school students. There were three groups and three stations (snakes, lizards, and turtles/tortoises). It was definitely a fun and educational event for everyone all around!

Madison Children’s Museum Workshop-Tree Dwellers

On Saturday, April 19th, 2014, MAHS was excited to come in to the Madison Children’s Museum to give our first actual workshop lecture all about tree dwelling animals! Although turnout was small, kids and parents alike had the chance to learn so many amazing facts and features about how and why many reptiles and amphibians live in trees or off the ground. Afterward, everyone had the up close opportunity to see and touch several species of arboreal and terrestrial snakes and lizards. It was an awesome first time event of its kind at the children’s museum, and we look forward to the next one!

Emerson Elementary School Science Night

On Tuesday, April 23rd, MAHS was invited back to Emerson Elementary science night to present all about reptiles and amphibians. Consisting of two rotating 30 minute group sessions, kids, parents, and teachers alike had the amazing opportunity to see and learn up close about both indigenous and exotic snakes as well as ask questions and overcome fears! MAHS always enjoys working with area schools in spreading the word on reptiles and amphibians!

UW Stevens Point Herpetology Society Visit and Tour

On Saturday, April 26th, we at MAHS traveled up to to beautiful Stevens Point in central Wisconsin to tour the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point’s herpetology and teaching labs and got up close and personal with many of their animals used in education and research. We’re usually the ones giving the talk or presentation, but this time, UWSP herp society student members also did an awesome job putting on one of their educational shows for us  Afterwards, we had lunch in downtown Stevens Point and then went field herping at a local spot nearby. Although it was still a bit too chilly up there compared to southern Wisconsin, we did manage to find a northern prairie skink, Plesteiodon septentrionalis. It was an all around great day!

Sauk County Earth Day

On Sunday, April 27th 2014, MAHS travelled up to scenic Baraboo Wisconsin to be a part of Sauk County’s annual Earth Day event held at the UW Baraboo/Sauk County campus. Consisting of many local and area environmental and community groups, organizations, and businesses, Earth Day 2014 enabled us the ability to expand our community presence by educating on all aspects of reptiles and amphibians. The snakes we bought were a crowd favorite among the show!

Lancaster Middle School Reptile Education Presentation
Location: Lancaster Middle School, Lancaster WI
Date: Friday, May 2nd 2014
On Saturday, May 2nd, MAHS was at Lancaster Wisconsin’s Middle School to present all about reptiles and amphibians! Over 200 students had the opportunity to see, touch, and learn about many different rare and unique species of reptiles and amphibians up close and what it takes to take care of them correctly! This was another awesome event and opportunity for MAHS to spread education in other areas of the state that otherwise have little to no reptile related resources.

MAHS Spring Field Outing-Southwest WI
Location: Various Locations in Southwestern Wisconsin

Saturday, May 17th 2014 was MAHS’ annual field herping outing to Southwestern Wisconsin! Being able to find, see, and learn hands on about reptiles and amphibians, in this case in the field, often leads to participants gaining a much greater level of awareness and understanding about the animals they see, which in turn leads to them caring much more about them and efforts to conserve and educate about these awesome animals. This was precisely the aim of the very recent MAHS field herping outing that weekend to Southwestern Wisconsin. It was a success overall!

Madison Children’s Museum Workshop-Amazing Amphibians

MAHS at Dane County Parks BikeDane

Lake Farm County Park, Madison WI
Date: Saturday, June 7th  2014
Situated along the capitol city bike trail that runs through Madison and Fitchburg, BikeDane 2014 was hosted by Dane County Parks and Recreation, and was an annual Bikeathon consisting of many various stops or detours along the way for bikers and any other trail users to stop at to meet and talk with area nonprofits as well as view and learn more about the 9 Springs E-Way. MAHS presented yet another of its unique and informative displays near Lake Farm Park with emphasis on native reptiles and amphibian, and proper reptile care and education. The event was a success overall, as we were the “most talked about” station along the area!

SummerPalooza
Location: Madison Children’s Museum, Madison WI
Date: Saturday June 14th 2014
Summer Palooza 2014 offered downtown fun and entertainment at the Madison Children’s Museum on Saturday June 14t. Held in and around the Madison Children’s museum, this event featured FREE admission to the museum, as well as live family friendly music and entertainment, a parade on capitol square, and of course, MAHS’ beloved reptiles! We enjoyed educating everyone who came by and assisted us about all aspects of herpetology from captive care tips and recommendations to conservation and reptile education. Overall, this was yet another successful event for MAHS that was much anticipated by many museum goers and staff members!

International Crane Foundation Tour
Location: International Crane Foundation, Baraboo WI
Date: Saturday June 21st 2014
On Saturday, June 21st, MAHS went on a public tour of the International Crane Foundation (ICF) located near Baraboo and the Wisconsin Dells! For over 40 years, the International Crane Foundation as housed and cared for a wide array of crane species from around the world for education, captive propagation, and reintroduction, as well as general landscape restoration. Although turnout for MAHS was small, we had a fun time overall learning about the cranes and ICF’s efforts to save them.

Saturday Science Exploration
Location: WI Institute for Discovery, Madison WI
Date: Saturday July 5th 2014
July 5 was another exciting Saturday Science event, Time Machine Earth: Dinosaurs, Fossils and the Future! By attending this event, MAHS helped to  explore topics relating to major events in Earth’s history and the tools scientists use to learn about events that occurred long ago. We  also investigated what’s happening today, like invasive species, urban design and energy use, and how these activities will alter the future of our planet.

MSCR Orchard Heights School Show
Location: Orchard Heights Elementary School, Madison WI

On Thursday, July 17th, MAHS was invited to Orchard Heights Elementary School for another of its amazing reptile show and tell programs! Kids and teachers alike were all super thrilled and excited to see, handle and learn about a variety of reptiles and invertebrates including a Water Monitor and Burmese python! Everyone who attended had the amazing opportunity to learn where the animals are found in the world, what they eat, their habits, behavior, and more!

International Bog Day at Volo Bog State Natural Area

On Sunday, July 27th 2014, MAHS was invited back to Volo Bog State Natural Area in Grant IL for their International Bog Day! This was another great opportunity to raise education and awareness of Illinois’ native reptile and amphibian species, especially those that thrive or are found in bogs. There were also several art auctions, cookies, desserts, and other amazing foods as well to make International Bog Day a great event overall!

Dane County Humane Society Summer Camp

Thursday, July 31st 2014, was another exciting opportunity for MAHS to come to the Dane County Humane Society’s annual summer camp series of 2014! Here, campers have the opportunity to see and learn about a wide array of animals and professions surrounding them, including reptiles and amphibians! On this presentation, campers and staff had the opportunity to learn the basics of reptile husbandry and education, what makes a good beginner reptile and what does not, and more! From geckos to Burmese pythons, everyone had a blast in learning about these animals!

Saturday Science Event

On Saturday, August 2nd 2014, MAHS was once again invited back to the WI Institute for Discovery’s “Saturday Science” event. A series of monthly science education and outreach events, Saturday science’s aim is to raise knowledge and involvement in the sciences, and in this case, reptiles and amphibians were a major topic of interest! MAHS always has fun and enjoys working with the UW Madison and WID with regards to these events!

SEWERFEST Summer Show
Location: Fountain Banquet Hall, Sturtevant WI
Date: Sunday, August 3th 2014
SEWERFest began in 2001 as a small Midwestern Reptile show. Since then, the annual Sale and Fest has grown in popularity and remains a Summertime (and now Fall!) favorite: Includes a wide variety of diverse captive bred animals Features quality breeders across Wisconsin, the Midwest, and all over the United States MAHS attended to raise understanding and awareness of reptiles and amphibians, as well as to team up with USARK (United States Association of Reptile Keepers) in actively raising awareness of, and defending our freedom to keep reptiles.

Girl Scouts of Southern Wisconsin’s Badgerland Presentation

On Tuesday, August 5th 2014, MAHS was invited to and began to establish a working partnership with the Girl Scouts of Southern Wisconsin Badgerland! MAHS was given the opportunity to share its knowledge and expertise by presenting on the native species of amphibians and reptiles of Wisconsin, their habits, biology, and much more! This was another excellent event, and look forward to working more with the GS Council in the future.

Summer Science Event at UW Madison

On Thursday, August 14th, MAHS was invited back to UW Madison’s Wisconsin Institute for Discovery to give a hands on table top display with some neat and amazing reptiles and amphibians! Although the groups were few and small, this event was part of the UW’s ongoing summer Science events held at the WID every Thursday, and was a lot of fun overall!

Leaping Lizards Presentation at Neshonoc Lakeside Camp Resort

August 16th was when MAHS traveled up to Neshonoc Lakeside Camp Resort’s dinosaur themed weekend, Dino Dig! At the event, we presented upon the huge variety of lizards found worldwide, including what they look like, where they live, what they eat, how they might resemble dinosaurs of the past, and more! This event was a definite blast and we look forward to this and yet even more educational opportunities in the Coulee region of Wisconsin!

Top 10 Beginner Reptiles-Prairie Athletic Club

On Thursday, August 21st, MAHS was at Prairie Athletic Club in Sun Prairie WI for their weekly summer camp programs! We presented upon the top 10 beginner reptiles, how to successfully keep them, and what makes them suitable for beginners. This was a great event with a strong turnout. Everyone simply loved it!

Mirror Lake State Park Native Species Presentation

On Saturday, August 23rd, MAHS was invited up to Mirror Lake State Park near Baraboo and the Wisconsin Dells to present all about native species of reptiles and amphibians! This was a great evening event for well over 30 area campers and park visitors as they learned which snakes in Wisconsin were venomous, how to tell a frog from a toad, and much more! Afterwards, visitors and even park rangers had the chance to see and touch several species of native reptiles and amphibians and learn even more about them. We look forward to continuing to work with area state parks and possibly even further contracting with the WI DNR on herp related projects.

MAHS at the Lube (Make a Difference Monday)-Janesville WI!

MAHS hung out and educated families and restaurant goers about reptiles and amphibians at Quaker Steak and Lube in Janesville WI! We had displays about reptiles and amphibians, information and care sheets, info about MAHS, and so much more!!! 5% of sales that day were donated to MAHS. It was great to see people come out and have some food and learn about the amazing world of reptiles and amphibians!!

Monthly MAHS Education Tables at PetsMart Madison West
Location: PetsMart, Madison WI West
Dates: Saturdays Monthly.
MAHS announces that it now is holding an educational table and display at PetsMart-Madison WI West each month. Store associates and shoppers had the chance to see and learn about many unique reptiles and amphibians, as well as what we do in the community, and how to become more involved with herps! We look forward to being at Petsmart again next month!

On Saturday, September 6th, MAHS was invited in to show some very cool and amazing reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates to a lucky 8 year old for his 8th birthday! Everyone had the chance to see and learn about tortoises, tarantulas, snakes, geckos, and more up close! It was a blast and overall positive and educational experience overall!

St. Charles FallFest

Saturday, September 6th 2014 was when MAHS was back in force at St. Charle’s Fallfest, an annual celebration in Hartland WI with food, games, prizes, carnival rides, live music, and of course, reptiles! Visitors and fair goers had the chance to see and learn about many unique reptiles up close including being able to enter a tortoise and Argentine black and white tegu pen! This event was a success, and blast all around!

AniMart Petfest

MAHS participated in its third annual Reptile Discovery Day at AniMart’s PetFest on September 13th. MAHS had a noticeable presence at Petfest, and had many live reptiles, and more opportunities to educate the public and to promote the reptile hobby. Everyone had the opportunity to hold snakes, large and small and learn that snakes are in fact so scary or to be feared after all!

Wisconsin Reptile Expo Fall Show

On September 14th, 2014, MAHS attended Madison’s only captive bred reptile show. This was a great opportunity to come see a wide variety of captive bred animals and be able to converse and educate the people that breed and care for those species and the general public. MAHS in partnership with USARK, raised awareness of current issues and events affecting reptile keeping and how expo goers can become active and get involved. It was a successful show overall.

Globe University Madison East Fall Open House

On Wednesday, September 17th, Globe University-Madison East held its annual open house celebration! Featuring many fun, games, activities, food, and prizes, MAHS also attended this event with many unique and amazing reptiles and amphibians for everyone to see and learn about. MAHS always enjoys working with Globe University to help make their events a memorable success!

UW Waukesha Continuing Education Program-Reptile Inspired Engineering
Location: UW Waukesha, Waukesha WI
Date: Friday, September 26th 2014
On Friday, September 26th, MAHS instructed a continuing education class at UW Waukesha on reptile and amphibian inspired engineering! How do geckos inspire new designs and inventions in adhesives? How can we look to the ability of some frogs to withstand freezing temperatures? These were all topics explored in depth as students who signed up learned much more about herps! We look forward to the next continuing education seminar with UW Waukesha!

MAHS Fall Field Outing-Central WI

On Saturday, September 26th, MAHS travelled back up to the central Wisconsin region to find and photograph the area’s many unique amphibians and reptiles! The outing was a success, with species such as four toed salamanders, spotted and blue spotted salamanders, spring peepers, fox snakes, northern water snakes, northern prairie skinks, hatchling snapping turtles, and other species of frogs and toads all being found! The outing was also a historic day in that the MAHS president and founder, Ryan McVeigh finally saw not one, but two smooth green snakes! The event was a blast and we look forward to future outings next year!

MAHS at the Lube (Make a Difference Monday)-Middleton WI!

MAHS hung out and educated families and restaurant goers about reptiles and amphibians at Quaker Steak and Lube in Middleton WI! We had displays about reptiles and amphibians, information and care sheets, info about MAHS, and so much more!!! 5% of sales that day were donated to MAHS. It was great to see people come out and have some food and learn about the amazing world of reptiles and amphibians!!

Winnebago Pet Expo

On Saturday, October 4th, MAHS was back  up to Oshkosh WI for the second annual Winnebago Pet Expo! We did what we and that was showing and educating about reptiles and amphibians as well as dispelling the many myths and misperceptions about them! It was a blast, so don’t miss out! We also presented on the top 10 reptiles for beginners, and had the opportunity to see and listen to the famous Jim Nesci of Cold Blood Creatues and Bubba the American Alligator! It was a great time!

NARBC Tinley Park

The North American Reptile Breeder’s Conference in Tinley Park IL is one of the largest reptile shows in the country! MAHS was back at this show vending and working hard to raising money in order to continue doing what we do, as well as educating the public on herpetological current issues, captive husbandry, and the importance of herpetological societies. We will also be raffling off a hatchling rack!!! This was one of the best shows in the U.S.! Congratulations to Fritz Meyer, the winner of the hatchling rack!

Wisconsin Science Festival

On Saturday, October 18th, MAHS once again attended the Wisconsin Science Festival 2014! WI Science Festivals are a public celebrations that offer a wide range of science, technology, engineering and math-related activities creative exhibitions, demonstrations, performances, tours, debates, workshops, concerts over a period of several days, in a variety of locations. MAHS educated Festival goers about unique and misunderstood reptiles and amphibians, and provided many very cool handouts and temporary tattoos. MAHS looks forward to next year’s Science Festival, where we plan to do much more (including a possible seminar on herps)!

MAHS at FantastiCon

FantistiCon is Milwaukee’s first comic book and pop culture convention! It was a family friendly celebration of all things creative, fun and influential in 20th Century pop culture! There was lots of amazing merchandise from comics, toys, collectibles, books, movies and more to choose from, with celebrity guests to meet, panels to attend, parties to go crazy at and all kinds of convention shenannigans to be had! And of course, photo opps with big snakes and other reptiles presented by MAHS! We look forward to doing similar Comic Con events in the future in Milwaukee, Madison, and Wisconsin Dells!

Madison Children’s Museum-Snakes, Spiders, and Other Creepy Crawlies? Not So Scary!

Many people are terrified of snakes, spiders, and other “creepy” crawlies, but how much of it is true? The Madison area Herpetological Society was once again on hand at the Madison Children’s Museum to  help show and educate about reptiles, and snakes in particular, as well as providing the opportunity to meet many of their scaly (but not so scary) friends, and the many reasons why they are so important!

SEWERFEST Fall Show

SEWERFest began in 2001 as a small Midwestern Reptile show. Since then, the annual Sale and Fest has grown in popularity and remains a Summertime (and now Fall!) favorite: Includes a wide variety of diverse captive bred animals Features quality breeders across Wisconsin, the Midwest, and all over the United States MAHS attended to raise understanding and awareness of reptiles and amphibians, as well as to team up with USARK (United States Association of Reptile Keepers) in actively raising awareness of, and defending our freedom to keep reptiles.

Madison College Presentation: Reptile Handling and Restraint

On Monday, November 17th 29th, MAHS was invited back at Madison College’s Veterinary Technician Association to provide an informative presentation on reptile handling and restraint techniques! Students and faculty of the organization alike had the opportunity to see and learn the skills and techniques for correctly handling a wide variety of species commonly seen in veterinary practice! MAHS looks forward to continuing to provide its expertise to the Madison College in the future!

Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) of Waukesha Reptile Presentation

On Friday, November 21st , MAHS presented at HAWS of Waukesha’s student based camp sessions to provide insight on reptile care and education!  Participants had the opportunity to ask and learn questions about which species make the best beginner’s pets, and which do not, as well as everything a potential pet owner needs to know about keeping a reptile! We look forward to continuing to work with and provide assistance to HAWS and other area humane societies in the future!

Wisconsin KidzFest!

The Wisconsin Kidz Fest is an annual children’s event with many interactive shows, shopping, and activities for families and individuals of all ages! Held at “Just a Game” Field House in Wisconsin Dells, this event will also featured a presentation on reptiles by MAHS! This was an exciting event MAHS had the opportunity to become a sponsor of, and we look forward to being at this event again next year!

Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Badgerland-Activate! STEM Event

Activate!-STEM Family event is an annual science, education, and mathematics event held at Monona Terrace and hosted by the Girl Scouts of Wisconsin-Badgerland! This year was MAHS’s first in participation! Over 350 participants attended last year’s event,, including Girl Scouts aged 8–14 and their families. Organizations and businesses brought interactive science experiments, engineering activities and engaging experiences in an expo-style event. Girls moved from station-to-station to discover and experience science, technology, engineering, art and math in a fun, exciting way. The long-term goal of the program is for each girls’ family to encourage her in STEM pursuits. It was a great night for learning all about reptiles!
