MAHS Spring 2016 Field Outing-Western WI
Location: Western WI
Date: Saturday, June 4th 2016
We recently got back home from our annual spring field herping outing to western Wisconsin! It was a great day of herping and hanging out as we traveled over several counties in search of herps! The weather forecast was sounding very ominous and unpromising at first the night before, but it turned out to be a nice day for most of the day until 4-4:30 pm. Definitely a success. After the trip, we only smelled *slightly* like sweat, mud, and water snake musk. Here is a recap of the species seen/found on the outing: -Several Eastern Garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) -3 Northern Water snakes (Nerodia sipedon) -Many Painted turtles (including several DORS along the way and one nesting)-Chrysemys picta -Many Green Frogs calling (Lithobates clamitans melanota) -Many Northern Leopard frogs (Lithobates pipiens) -1 American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus) -5 Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) including some yearlings -1 Blue Racer (Coluber constrictor foxii) -1 Common Snapping Turtle on road (Chelydra serpentina) *Photos by Nyann Plummer and Richie Braatz.
